7 simple tips to make your perfume last longer
How to make your perfume last longer – 7 simple tips for a long-lasting fragrance
You spray on your favorite perfume in the morning – and a few hours later, you feel like the scent has already disappeared? 🌸 Don't worry: That doesn't necessarily mean your perfume isn't long-lasting.
How long a perfume remains noticeable on the skin depends on various factors: the fragrance concentration and the composition of the scent – because not every fragrance note lasts the same length of time – but also on your skin type, application technique, storage, and even whether you have already become accustomed to the scent yourself.
With these 7 simple perfume tips, you can optimally support the longevity of your favorite fragrance.
1. Apply perfume to well-cared-for skin
Dry skin often provides less hold for fragrances than well-cared-for skin.
It's best to apply your perfume after showering to clean, well-cared-for skin. A neutral, preferably unscented body lotion or body oil can create a good base.
💡 My tip: If your body lotion already has a strong scent, it can influence the character of your perfume. A neutral moisturizer allows your favorite fragrance to shine.
2. Choose the right spots for perfume
Most people automatically spray perfume on their wrists or neck. This is perfectly fine, of course – but there are other body parts where a fragrance can develop beautifully.
Warm areas of the body are particularly suitable, such as:
-
Neck
-
behind the ears
-
Wrists
-
Elbow creases
-
Neck and décolletage (limited)
☀️ Caution in summer: Avoid the neck and décolletage when exposed to direct sunlight, as some fragrance ingredients can make the skin more photosensitive.
Natural body warmth supports the development of the fragrance.
You don't have to spray yourself from head to toe, by the way. 😅 A few targeted sprays are usually perfectly sufficient.
3. Do not rub perfume
Spray wrists and then rub them together? Many people do that – I used to too, by the way. 😅
Better: spray and simply let it dry.
Rubbing a perfume doesn't simply "destroy" it. However, friction and additional warmth can influence how the fragrance notes develop on your skin.
So rather: spray, wait a moment and let the fragrance do its work. 😊 I once made a reel about it...
4. Spraying perfume on clothes – sensible or not?
On clothes, a fragrance can sometimes remain noticeable longer than on the skin. Especially for people with sensitive skin, this is of course an advantage.
Nevertheless, a little caution is advised here. Perfume can leave stains on delicate or light-colored textiles. Especially with silk and other fine materials, I would therefore prefer to avoid it.
If you want to spray perfume on clothes, it's best to test it first on an inconspicuous spot and keep some distance.
5. Not every fragrance lasts equally long
Why does one perfume last several hours, while another seemingly disappears faster?
This can be completely normal.
Fresh, citrusy, and light fragrance notes often feel airier and can fade into the background more quickly. Warm, sweet, woody, or oriental fragrance characters, on the other hand, are often perceived for longer.
The fragrance concentration also plays an important role. An Eau de Parfum generally contains more fragrance ingredients than an Eau de Toilette and can therefore often remain noticeable on the skin for longer. But this is not always the case.
But here, too, the rule applies: More fragrance concentration does not automatically mean that a perfume lasts equally long on every person.
Here are some particularly long-lasting fragrances
114 Dessert Whisper (Woody (Oud), Rosy, Fruity)
137 Sicilian Garden (Spicy Tobacco meets Honey and Lavender)
143 Sweet Dust (Intense Vanilla Scent with a hint of Coconut and Woody Notes)
6. Store perfume correctly
Proper storage is essential for the longevity of a perfume. A beautiful perfume bottle in the bathroom may look decorative – but the bathroom is not necessarily the best place to store perfume. 😅
Heat, humidity, direct sunlight, and strong temperature fluctuations can damage a fragrance over time.
It's best to store your perfume:
-
in a dry place
-
protected from direct sunlight
-
at the most consistent room temperature possible
-
not directly next to the heater
-
not permanently by the window
However, you don't need to store your perfumes in the refrigerator. A cabinet or dresser in a rather cool, dry room is usually perfectly sufficient.
7. Maybe you just don't smell your scent anymore
Do you know that feeling?
You spray on your favorite perfume in the morning and by afternoon you think: "I don't smell anything at all anymore!"
And then someone suddenly asks you: "Wow, what perfume are you wearing?" 😅
This can be due to what is called olfactory adaptation (fragrance blindness). Our brain gets used to smells that surround us for a longer period of time. As a result, we perceive our own scent much less consciously at some point.
This means: If you no longer smell your perfume yourself, it doesn't automatically mean it has disappeared.
So, before you simply spray again, ask someone near you. Perhaps your scent is still clearly perceptible to others. 😉
Why does perfume last differently long on different people?
Perhaps you know this: You and a friend use the same perfume – and yet it smells a little different on both of you.
This is completely normal.
Skin type, skin moisture, body heat, and individual skin chemistry can influence how a fragrance develops and how long it remains perceptible.
That's exactly why I always recommend testing a fragrance on your own skin when buying perfume, if possible.
Because a perfume can smell completely different right after spraying it on than after 30 minutes or an hour.
🌸 Give a fragrance time. The top note is just the first impression – only then does the actual character of the perfume develop on your skin.
How can you make perfume last longer?
The most important tips at a glance:
✔ Well-maintained skin as a base
✔ Apply perfume specifically to warm areas of the body
✔ Do not rub after spraying
✔ Handle delicate clothing with care
✔ Consider fragrance concentration and character
✔ Store perfume in a cool, dry, and dark place
My Conclusion ❤️
To make your perfume last longer, you don't need complicated tricks.
Often it's the little things that make a difference: well-groomed skin, the right application spots, good storage, and above all, a little patience.
And perhaps most importantly: Don't just trust your own nose. If you no longer perceive your favorite scent after a few hours, it doesn't mean that others don't smell it anymore.
Because that's what makes perfume so fascinating: A fragrance develops a little differently on every skin and accompanies us through the day. ❤️
